Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery

Axay S. Kalathia, MD, is one of the first surgeons to perform TORS surgery on the Florida West Coast.

The benefits of treating patients with tumors of the oropharynx with TORS can include:

  • Reduced operative time with improved swallowing function compared with traditional surgery
  • More rapid recovery with shorter hospitalization compared with traditional surgery
  • Better identification of which patients will benefit from chemotherapy and radiation therapy (rather than giving these treatments with their side effects to all patients routinely)
  • Potentially reduced doses and areas of radiation needed, further lowering the risk of swallowing dysfunction

Da Vinci® Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS)

The da Vinci® Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) allows Dr. Kalathia to operate through the mouth rather than having to perform more invasive debilitating surgeries. The system features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate with far greater range than the human wrist, enabling enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.

TORS surgery is also an important tool in the treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea for patients who are unable to benefit from CPAP therapy. For patients with sleep apnea, the robotic technology is able to reduce the obstruction at the base of the tongue, an area that has always been very difficult to treat before.
